SYNOPSIS

A Victorian family prepare a toy-theatre for their annual performance of A Christmas Carol. The audience enters the imagination of one of the children and quickly the cardboard stage transforms to reveal a magical world containing real dancers and stylised sets. The classic tale unfolds on screen in a rich tapestry of highly absorbing, haunting and theatrical drama with characters portrayed by dancers and voiced by an eclectic cast of the world’s most recognisable actors.

DIRECTORS’ NOTES

We wanted to create a bold, dance-lead feature film where the movement was as mesmerising as good animation; fluid, emotional and easy to watch. Russell Maliphant’s work is famed for being hypnotic, seamless and flowing and proved to be the ideal match for our vision.

Dance is a key factor in the film’s originality and charm.

"This new interpretation of A Christmas Carol takes a familiar story and gives it an innovative treatment. It is like meeting a rejuvenated much-loved friend; fresh and full of vitality. The mix of danced action and spoken narration brings a completely new and exciting movement dimension to Dickens’ characters whilst remaining authentic to his wonderful narrative; with arresting performances by an excellent dance cast, led by the irrepressible Michael Nunn, as Scrooge, utilising Russell Maliphant’s imaginative choreography, and aligned to familiar voices bringing richness to the text. It is a thoroughly refreshing, absorbing and unique iteration of this enduring classic that uplifts the human spirit and makes every Christmas that little bit better.”

Graham Watts, Chairman of the Dance Section of The Critics’ Circle
